Description
Today was definitely the most important day in Syria since the beginning of the revolution. The assasination of Defence Minister Daoud Rajha, former Defence Minister and security adviser Hasan Turkmani, Assad’s brother-in-law Asef Shawkat and (probably) Interior Minister Mohammed Sha’ar in a bomb attack on the National Security Council has turned Syria upside down. The news of the assassinations was followed by reports of the defections of dozens of officers and soldiers in different parts of the country. However, the situation remains very hard in Daraa, Homs, Hama, Idleb, Deir Ezzor, Jabal Akrad in Lattakia, Aleppo countryside and Damascus, where most of today’s 114 martyrs fell. Many districts of the capital and it’s suburbs are under attack by armoured vehicles and helicopters and there are reports of shabiha committing atrocities against residents of the capital. Tonight, Damascus is under heavy fire, possibly from artillery. We believe the situation will continue to escalate as the regime seeks revenge for today’s assassinations. See the map for more info.
