تتبع مدينة داريا محافظة ريف دمشق وتُعدُّ من أكبر مدن الغوطة الغربية وتبعد عن العاصمة دمشق أقل من 8 كم، ولموقع المدينة أهمية استراتيجية كونها تقع بالقرب من مطار المزة العسكري ومقرِّ المخابرات الجوية الواقع ضمن بناء المطار.
تعرَّضت مدينة داريا لما تعرضت له بقية المدن والمناطق التي عارضت النظام السوري، من عمليات قصف وتدمير واقتحام منازل واعتقال تعسفي وتعذيب وموت بسبب التعذيب، لدى أرشيف الشبكة السورية لحقوق الإنسان تقارير عديدة توثِّق أبرز تلك الانتهاكات في المدينة، والتي كان أبرزها مجزرة داريا الكبرى بين 20 - 27 آب/ 2012، لقد عانت المدينة من جريمة الحصار والتجويع ففي منتصف تشرين الثاني/ 2012 فرضت قوات النظام السوري حصاراً مطبقاً عليها بعد حملة عسكرية واسعة، وبدأت تداعيات الحصار من جوع ونقص في الغذاء والدواء بالظهور تدريجياً، وسط عجز دولي عن رفع الحصار، أو في الحد الأدنى إيصال
المساعدات، كما لم يتوقف القصف الجوي بمختلف أنواع الأسلحة بما فيها البراميل المتفجرة والصواريخ، والذخائر العنقودية والأسلحة الكيمائية.
