مع بدء مباحثات السلام بين الحكومة السورية وجماعات المعارضة في أستانا بكازاخستان، ما زال 700,000 إنسان داخل سوريا – 300,000 منهم من الأطفال – عالقين في المناطق المحاصرة بلا أي إمدادات من المواد الأساسية التي تقيم أودهم، وذلك بحسب الأمم المتحدة. وقد وصلت بعض المجموعات بالعدد إلى مليون إنسان.
إن وقف إطلاق النار الذي توصلت إليها سوريا وتركيا في 30 ديسمبر مرحب به بالطبع، ولكنه ليس سوى خطوة واحدة نحو تخفيف معاناة ملايين السوريين. فنحو خمسة ملايين سوري في شتى أنحاء البلاد ليس لهم سوى نفاذ محدود إلى المساعدات الإنسانية. وما زال القتال متواصلًا في ضواحي دمشق، حيث يعيش ملايين محرومين من المياه النظيفة؛ وكثير من السوريين ما زالوا على ضعفهم السابق على وقف إطلاق النار.
