في 9 ديسمبر/كانون الأول 2013، تمّ اختطاف النشطاء الأربع من قبل مجموعة من المسلحين قاموا بمداهمة مكاتب "مركز توثيق الانتهاكات في سوريا" في مدينة دوما بريف دمشق, ولم يرد أي خبر عن مصيرهم طوال الأشهر الماضية التي طالت ممّا فاقم المخاوف على صحّة وسلامة ومصير المختطفين الأربع.
رزان زيتونة إحدى المحامين والمحاميات الأساسيين المدافعين عن المعتقلين والمعتقلات السياسيين في سوريا منذ عام 2001. واستمرّ نشاطها الحقوقي طوال سنوات قبل آذار 2011, وبعد آذار 2011 انضمّت رزان وزميلها المحامي ناظم حمادة إلى الصف الأوّل من داعمي الحراك السوري وشاركوا في المظاهرات السلمي. تحدّثت رزان إلى وسائل الإعلام, كتبت مشاهداتها, ثمّ أسسّت مع عدد من النشطاء الآخرين "مركز توثيق الانتهاكات في سوريا" وكانت إحدى مؤسسي "لجان التنسيق المحلية" التي تنظم عمل اللجان المحلية في مختلف المدن والبلدات السورية. تعرّضت رزان للملاحقة الأمنيّة الشرسة بسبب نشاطها واعتقل زوجها
"وائل حمادة" وأخيه للضغط عليها من قبل المخابرات الجويّة في خريف 2011 ثمّ أفرج عنهما لاحقاً.
