An eyewitness to the Douma massacre June 29, 2012:
No clashes took place today. However, we woke up to find that the regime’s
forces had raided the city in the early morning reinforced with tanks and
military vehicles from three directions. I heard a man from the Alwaite
sect saying ‘Kill this man, I don’t want to see anybody alive here,
ordering the troops to kill anybody spotted in the streets. Every time they
killed someone, they shouted ‘Allah Akbar ‘to make people believe that they
were the Free Syrian Army. Consequently, people would go out to streets,
and then be killed by these pro-regime shabeeha militias. The troops extra
judicially executed men and left large numbers of them in the streets.
Nobody could leave shelters to transport the bodies of the victims because
security forces targeted anyone spotted moving in the city. Troops launched
a raid campaign of residential houses, destroyed them and killed the
civilians inside. Bodies of the victims are still in streets till now.
Then, helicopters have bombarded the city from 10 am to 6 pm targeting main
streets.
Security forces raided Hamdan private hospital, extra judicially executed
the wounded and seized control of it making it almost impossible to aid the
injured there. They arrested two of the Red Crescent staff while trying to
leave the city in their car after targeting them with a mortar shell.
At midday, a sniper targeted a family of three women and their brother who
tried to leave in their car. The man was arrested, and a woman’s hand was
amputated and the others were shot in chest one of them is elderly. Two men
took them back to Douma to treat them, but the elderly have died of the
wounds. We broke into a doctor clinic to take medical supplies to treat the
women because they were still bleeding .I left the old dead woman in the
street like the other bodies because people inside the building we were in
refused to keep her body as they were afraid of security forces who might
raid the building and kill citizens who are staying in it. Suddenly, I
heard women voices, some of them were moaning in a shelter, but we couldn’t
help them because of the lack of the pharmacies and immediate care centres
which the security forces burned down during a raid campaign. The security
forces raided the first aid banks since they first stormed the city.
Families and I inside shelters lived without water, food and power due to
heavy indiscriminate shelling that destroyed the power station and water
tanks. A child got unconsciousness because of the lack of food. The total
figure of the wounded people was about eighty most of whom were women while
the victims were thirty. In addition, more than one hundred people have
been arrested.
Although the city came under the control of the regime army, mortar and
helicopter shelling have not stopped resulting in mass destruction of the
houses reminding us of the massacre of Hama in the eighties which I have
seen only in photos amid terrible media blackout. People in Douma are
asking all Humanitarian organizations and the media to interfere and stop
the massacres that take the lives of the peaceful residents particularly
women and children.
I managed to reach the city outskirts in order to relate stories I have
seen and to break the news as the regime cut off all means of
communications to hide the truth.
