  • Description:
Syria Tracker Documented Killings: A total 36,686 victims, in 191 Places, over 20 months from March 18, 2011 to October 14, 2012. Detailed list by province is available here Detailed data is available for download soon Google Earth file is available here. Findings: - For those causes that have killed more than 100 people, it is not surprising that Air bombardment and Artillery are the highest killers, with civilian areas being shelled.  The elevated rates of more “personal” types of assault (Beating or Stabbing, Sniper) is above average for females. - 70% of all female deaths by Beatings and stabbings happened in Homs- the majority in May 2012. - Deaths by Snipers are most common among women in Homs, Rif Damashq (Damascus province, not the city), and Aleppo. - Gunshot deaths for women are the highest in Rif Damashq and Homs as well- this may imply targeting.
Other important findings: - Not surprising, but Artillery and Air Bombardment have been killing increasing numbers since June 2012. - Use of air attacks has been a larger factor in the northern and easier areas (Idleb, Aleppo, Dayr Az Zor.)

Note: in Aleppo, more long range fire than gunshots,  and Rif Dimashq has an ugly amount of beatings and stabbings.   Aleppo, Dayr Az Zor and Idleb getting most of the air attacks.   Almost all sniper activity in Rif Dimashq and Aleppo.
Note: This graph shows how Syrian Government has been relying more on artillery and air strikes since Mar 2012 (this month also had the highest number of soldiers executed for refusing to obey orders.)  And the fighting was the most intense in Idleb in March 2012.  It’s pretty clear that the Syrian Government was probably motivate to use more long range weapons (being more “Hands off”) to prevent dissension [this is especially the case in Aleppo and Idleb.]
Note: Last 30 days, the spike in beatings and stabbings around the 26th of Sept (a recent masscacre)
